* : The optional sign means that depending on your 3D software, you may have an export dialog box, allowing you to select the 3D attributes you wish to export.
** The .ply format can support in a non standard way other 3D features such as textures and vertex colors. As it is non standard, we do not support those features.
*** : For now, we only use the first UV coords channel set for the 3D model.
**** : 3dvia.com supports transparent textures: you only have to use a texture that supports transparency (Red, Green, Blue and Alpha channels). Formats like .png or .tga support such features.
WarningThe fact that the format theoritically supports specific 3D attributes doesn't mean that your exporter
will support these 3D attributes practically, according to the software's restrictions. A lot of exporters produce non correct and buggy formats. These exports may naturally produce wrong
results in 3dvia.com; or worse, they may also not be recognized.
We encourage you to always re-import your exported model at least in your authoring tool, or better in several authoring tools to measure lost data.
What happens if a 3D attribute is missing?
-
Normals: If normals information is missing, we recompute normals using vertex and faces information. We use a threshold angle of 45 degrees to distinguish smooth edges from
sharp edges. As we compute normals in this way, smoothing groups are also defined.
-
UV coords: If UV coords are missing, we are not able to find how a texture would be applied to your model. Thus your model will have no texture.
-
Ambient color: If Ambient color is missing, we use the default value rgb=(0,0,0)
-
Diffuse color: If Diffuse color is missing, we use the default value rgb=(0,0,0). If a diffuse texture is defined, this texture overrides Diffuse color information.
-
Specular color: If Specular color is missing, we use the default value rgb=(0,0,0)
-
Specular level: If Specular level is missing, we use the default value power=0.
-
Specular power: If Specular power is missing, we use the default value power=1.
-
Emissive color: If Emissive color is missing, we use the default value rgb=(0,0,0)
-
Transparency: If Transparency is missing, we use the default value transparency=0 meaning that your objet is completely opaque.
-
Diffuse Texture: If no Diffuse Texture is set, we use the diffuse color instead.
Notes about 3D formats and exports:
- The .obj format does not contain any information about materials. Materials are exported in a .mtl file that is referenced by the .obj file. Thus, for 3dvia.com upload and publishing, don't
forget to pack the .obj, the texture and the .mtl file into one single zip.
- Exporting .3ds files from 3dsMax: Instanced objects are not exported.
- Exporting .3ds files from 3dsMax using ColladaMax: Specular information is not exported in a standard way.
